I find a useful distinction to make on the web is between the two states of data: flow and archive. Flow is all the new stuff getting posted. Archive is the collection of all that new stuff.

In long-term value, the archive is far more valuable.

I wrote about the same problem, in a different context, for Skittles' Twitter (then YouTube, then ...) campaign: all flow, no archive. All sizzle, no steak: http://blog.adhack.com/2009/03/02/skittles-widget-all-flow-no-archive/

Great post, Ana!

I think the difference is that people our age are becoming increasingly more immune to obnoxious marketing. We are tired of brands talking down to us, and want them to talk with us.

The way we build brand affinity has changed, too. No longer are positive feelings around a brand built because of a product. To me, people want to know more about the company and ensure their values align with the company. Again, it's being able to relate as human-to-human by building a relationship.

Solid post, and I like GE's approach to simply pulling back the curtain with genuine storytelling about what they're doing. While done with a bit more gloss, I've noticed similar work lately from both Nike and Apple, who have invested more time in talking directly with designers, engineers and scientists behind their work. http://www.socialmediaworx.com/2008/apple-markets-its-new-macbook-series-with-great-video-storytelling/

Great commentary. You picked up the same rationale and reasoning that the Barbarian Group speaks to in this Adweek article regarding the work. Thanks again! http://bit.ly/cKB4Q
